On 9 September 2024, the LOLABAT project held its final event, presenting key findings from the development of rechargeable nickel-zinc batteries aimed at enhancing energy storage systems. The event brought together a wide range of experts from academia, industry, and several EU-funded projects focused on battery technology, energy sustainability and the circular economy.
Among the many collaborative discussions were insights into advancing battery innovation and the sustainable use of critical materials, making the event a pivotal moment for those invested in Europe’s battery future. In addition, the event served as a platform for knowledge exchange, bringing in experts from other EU-funded projects working on complementary research areas.
The RESPECT project was prominently represented at the event by Benjamin Wilson from AALTO University, who delivered a concise presentation of the project. Benjamin also took part in the “Empowering Tomorrow: Advancements in Battery Technology and Sustainable Material Solutions for Production, Recycling, and Supply Chain Management in the EU” round table discussions which covered the need for different recycling technologies for the recovery of critical materials to feed Europe’s growing battery manufacturing sector. The roundtable brought together experts to debate the future of battery technology and the role of sustainable practices in ensuring Europe's battery supply chain remains competitive and environmentally responsible. Featured projects: SMHYLES, GR4FITE3, IPCEI Batteries, BATMACHINE, SOLSTICE and others.
These projects span a broad range of themes related to battery technology, from innovative materials and recycling methods to enhancing the circular economy and improving supply chain resiliency. Their collective participation underscored the collaborative nature of the EU’s battery research ecosystem.
The event enhanced the dialogue around best practices in battery technology and recycling, an area where RESPECT is poised to play a crucial role. As a result of this exposure, RESPECT is now more widely recognized across Europe, potentially opening doors to new partnerships and further research opportunities in the fields of energy storage, sustainability, and the circular economy.
