RESPECT at the REVITALISE Seminar 2026

On 21 May 2026, Benjamin Wilson from Aalto University represented RESPECT at the REVITALISE Project Seminar 2026, hosted by the University of Aveiro in Aveiro, Portugal. The dedicated gathering on the future of sustainable battery recycling brought together approximately 75 participants from academia and industry.

The seminar explored the latest advances in green, low-cost, and environmentally friendly recycling processes across a broad range of battery materials, with a particular focus on hydrometallurgy, direct recovery, solvent development, and simulation. Sessions fostered dynamic exchanges between leading experts on greener strategies for lithium and sodium-ion battery circularity, in support of European Green Transition objectives related to batteries and critical raw materials.

RESPECT's contribution

Benjamin Wilson delivered an invited talk entitled "Recycling of Batteries: Environmental and Circular Economic Aspects", drawing on published results from the project. The presentation highlighted RESPECT's work on low-CO₂ hydrometallurgy as an innovative recycling approach with the potential to exceed current EU recovery targets for battery-related metals. It also showcased how life-cycle assessments based on process modelling can serve as a practical tool for estimating the environmental impact of future waste battery treatment routes.

The event provided a valuable opportunity to engage with a diverse audience on the critical role of innovative recycling in securing Europe's supply of critical and important raw materials.
